A. My name is Dimakatso Tlhoaele. My professional qualification is Archaeology and I am a Research Technician in the Human Sciences Department at the KwaZulu-Natal Museum. As a Research Technician, I am responsible for the inbound and outbound loans of collections from our Museum to other institutions. I assist visiting researchers with any queries they might have and ensure that the artefact is in pristine condition for collection.

𝗤. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺?
A. My biggest highlight working at the Museum has been meeting all the researchers I was told about or I read about their work during my undergraduate years in university. I have been able to work with local and international researchers and assist with the fieldwork that takes place. Another highlight is being the first person to touch and take care of an artefact prior to it being exhibited, which for me is priceless.

A. To be a Research Technician requires a person to be patient, pay attention to detail, yet not limiting their creativeness within the job. You need to dedicate yourself to your studies and make use of any opportunity that comes your way. The Research Technician role is diverse and does not limit you to one thing, you are able to collaborate with other researchers and publish papers as well.
