The KwaZulu-Natal Museum has been named the 2026 National Arts and Culture Awards (NACA) Outstanding Museum Award winner, receiving national recognition for its contribution to the preservation, promotion and celebration of South Africa’s heritage.

The Museum was one of three finalists in the Outstanding Museum category, alongside Karoo Origins and The Phansi Museum. Being shortlisted among leading museums in the country was already a significant achievement, making the announcement of the winner a particularly proud moment for the KwaZulu-Natal Museum.

The award was presented at the 2026 NACA Awards ceremony held at Sun City on 21 August 2026.

The Museum celebrates this achievement as a reflection of the dedication and contribution of the many people who have worked at, supported and contributed to the KwaZulu-Natal Museum throughout its more than 122-year history.

From its collections and exhibitions to its education programmes, research, public engagement and outreach initiatives, the Museum continues to play an important role in making South Africa’s natural and cultural heritage accessible to the public.

The NACA Outstanding Museum Award recognises this ongoing commitment to excellence and the important role museums play in preserving heritage and connecting communities with the stories of the past and present.

Representing the KwaZulu-Natal Museum at the awards ceremony were Director Luthando Maphasa, Dr Ghilraen Laue and Ntobeko Gumede.

The KwaZulu-Natal Museum extends its appreciation to everyone who has contributed to the Museum’s journey over more than 122 years. This award is a celebration of that collective legacy and the continued work of the Museum in serving its communities and preserving heritage for generations to come.
