It's been a busy week for our Education Depts. outreach team, as they have been actively raising awareness of National Arbour Week, by planting indigenous trees with neighbouring schools, educating learners about sustainable environmental practices and the important role trees play in our biodiversity.
The team has so far engaged with five local schools, being Ubhedu Primary, Khalawemuke Primary, KwaMyeza Primary, Ekwandeni Primary and Nkanyezeni Primary, with more school visits planned for Thursday (04/09/25) and Friday (05/09/25). As a part of the celebrations, each school receives a "Tree of the Year" which is planted on the school's premises, aligning with governments, "𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞." The initiative aims to benefit communities and refers to the planting and care of vegetation in urban and rural areas.
For this year's National Arbour Week celebrations, the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) have identified the 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐤𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝 (𝑆𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑜𝑥𝑦𝑙𝑜𝑛 𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑒) and 𝐑𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐤𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝 (𝑀𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑜𝑝𝑠 𝑐𝑎𝑓𝑓𝑟𝑎) as the Trees of the Year.
